In his presentation, “Wars of Men, Men of War,” Coşkun Aral blends his stories with images of events and people he encountered during his career as a war correspondent and documentary producer. His impressive presentation is masterfully complemented by his speech, in which he emphasizes that there is a way to achieve everything even if the goals seem impossible.
Who is Coşkun Aral?
Coşkun Aral was born in 1956 in Siirt. He started his professional career as a press photographer in 1974. His name spread across the globe via Sipa Press thanks to his photographs of Turkey’s “Bloody May 1st, 1977”. He worked as Sipa Press’ Turkey reporter as well as as a freelance photographer for a number of Turkish media outlets, such as Turkish News Agency, Milliyet and Hürriyet. He started photographing wars in countries such as Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Chad and the Far East in 1980. In 1980 he conducted the first ever interview in history with the hijackers of a hijacked airplane. He is the founder of İZ TV, the first ever Turkish documentary channel. Aral continues to work as a war photographer for periodicals such as Time, Newsweek, Paris-Match, Stern and Epoca. He also continues to work as the producer of his TV documentary program, Haberci.

Güler Aras is best known for her remarkable academic work which includes national and international speeches. An expert on finance, banking, capital markets, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability, Dr. Aras has published more than 20 books (11 published worldwide) and has written over 200 articles.
Dr. Aras recently joined Indeks Speakers’ Agency, attracting attention with interesting speech topics such as sustainability, a popular concept in today’s business world. Who is Güler Aras?
Güler Aras is a professor of Finance at Yıldız Technical University’s Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, where she also served as dean as well as president of the Social Sciences Institute until 2013. Dr. Aras is also the director of Research and Application Centre for Financial Studies, Corporate Management and Sustainabilityand a visiting professor at De Montfort University UK where she gave regular classes and seminars and conducts research.
Beginning in 2014, she will also work as a visiting professor at The Center for Financial Markets and Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. Güler Aras is the editor of an international magazine and is a board member for many magazines, including 10 international titles. She is a member of the scientists committee of many national and international seminars, and she is a founding member of the Institute of Financial Management Association of Turkey (IMA Turkey Chapter, where she also worked as a chairwoman, as well as the Turkish Transparency Foundation. She remains active in a variety of public foundations and institutions.

Who is Hakan Çelik?
He was educated in Communications at Istanbul University. He completed Master’s degree programs on “Science fiction cinema” in the Faculty of Communications and on “Political structure of the European Union” in the Faculty of Political Science at his alma mater. He had an apprentieship at the BBC, Glasgow – 1990. Çelik was granted scholarship from the British Foreign Office.

Passion for travelling is genetic
Saffet Emre Tonguç travels, takes photographs and writes. Tonguç made it his profession to leave his home behind and travel. He explains his feelings thus: “passion for travelling is genetically coded into people. For me, this desire has broadened my horizons and perspectives. For most people life consists of working and acquiring property. For me, the important thing is to acquire mental affluence.”
Tonguç has been on numerous expeditions and journeys to more than one hundred countries. He says that Turkey should in theory be one of the world’s premier travel destinations, but there are major deficiencies in the way the country is promoted abroad. “Turkey is the shortest distance between points A and B. For this reason, an amazing number of civilisations left their mark on the country. One of the most reliable guide books, Lonely Planet, says ‘If you want to see Greek ruins, go to Turkey, not to Greece; if you want to see Roman ruins, go to Turkey, not to Italy’. This is so true! But we are not aware of this and we don’t appreciate it. I have been to more than one hundred countries; of all these places, Anatolia made one of the greatest impressions on me.”
Who is Saffet Emre Tonguç?
Saffet Emre Tonguç started working as a tour guide in 1987 whilst studying tourism. Since 1990 his amateur photographs have appeared in various international publications, primarily in the USA and Australia. He was a narrator on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” In 2005, he received the Rotary Club’s Professional Excellence Award. He has travelled to around one hundred countries both for professional reasons and personal interest. He was named Turkey’s most well-travelled tour guide by the Turkish Association of Tourist Guides in 2005. He holds the award for “Best Travel Writer 2006.”
